The second event I went to on my ten day trip to Florida was OSW Spring Break Bash. I had had so much fun attending OSW Black Friday, I was determined to make the trip again for another event asap. I had been looking forward to this because it was marking the start of the drift season for me, my calendar was filling out and I was on my way to checking out a lot of events and tracks I had never shot at before. However, right before OSW SBB, it started to become clear that many events I had planned to attend were going to be canceled due to the rapidly spreading Coronavirus. Going into this weekend with that knowledge, I wanted to be sure I had as much fun as I could, because I suddenly realized I didn’t know when I’d be able to do something like this again.
The downtime between seasons in drifting has always been my undoing. I spend a couple months eager to get out to a track and shoot, and 2020 has been nothing short of that exact feeling. As March approached, I lined up months of events and was looking forward to the season starting. As everyone is well aware of by now, this year is going to be different. Event after event is being postponed as we deal with a global pandemic, and it’s become difficult to anticipate when exactly we can return to more confirmed schedules. With that being said, I had the opportunity to spend ten days in Florida and shoot and stream two different events, Klutch Kickers and OSW Spring Break Bash.
Let me begin with this, I don’t think I’ve ever shot an event like Desert Meihan. What I loved about shooting last year was the chance to travel to so many different tracks around the country and experience the huge variety of local events. Desert Meihan takes place in Chandler, Arizona, at the Bob Bondurant High Performance Driving School. I’ve shot there a few times, but surprisingly not that much considering I live in southern California. With the event being one of the last ones I could attend in 2019 though, I couldn’t resist the chance to go.
First of all, as always, I am woefully behind on keeping this blog updated. But the good news is that I come bearing gifts from the latest event I went to, OSW Black Friday! I’ve spent 2019 making a concerted effort to attend more grassroots events than I have in the past few years, so it was basically a no-brainer when some friends recommended I fly out to Orlando for this event.
Sometimes I’m good at keeping things like this (this being the blog) updated, but most of the time, I’m pretty terrible at it. But, such is life. After Formula Drift Seattle, I stayed a couple extra days so I could get the chance to shoot at PARC, outside of Portland, Oregon. This was only my second time shooting at this track, but honestly, I had to do it. I loved shooting here so much the first time and regretted not driving down more than once when I lived in Seattle, I felt like it would have been a disservice to myself if I didn’t ensure I shot PARC again.
Living on the west coast means I miss out on a lot of the rad variety of drift events that happen on the other side of the country. If you’ve ever heard anyone talk about Englishtown and Club Loose, you probably have heard how fucking great the track and those events are. Fortunately for myself, Club Loose runs an event the Sunday after Formula Drift New Jersey, so I’ve been lucky enough to make it to Englishtown for the past three years.
There is one event that makes me feel like I’m living in a real life Forza Horizon game, and that is the GridLife festival. I went to GridLife South in 2016 and 2017, but unfortunately missed the events last year. I often have been told that GridLife Midwest is the best of the festival series but never had the opportunity to go until this year. After returning home for a couple days from Final Bout, I was headed out to the Midwest again for GridLife!
Final Bout is one of those events that I think basically anyone that is into drifting puts on their bucket list. It certainly has been on mine for years, and this year I finally got the opportunity to go shoot it!
At the beginning of 2019 I decided I wanted to shoot more events this year than I’ve been able to for the past couple of years. I’ve been hindered by the cost of travel and subconsciously have let that hold me back from making it out to many events that I’ve always wanted to attend. So without further ado, let’s dive into some of the events I’ve hit this year so far. You may have seen me edit these photos on my Twitch channel, so now here’s the opportunity to get a good look at them!
