Moving into 2021 felt surreal, trying to navigate all that happened in 2020 and how far removed and different it was from previous years. Looking towards the 2021 season of Formula Drift, it was strange to imagine any sort of semblance of a return to ‘normalcy.’ To me, the 2020 season’s most remarkable difference was the total absence of fan presence at two of four events, with the absence of spectators in the pits at a third event as well. This made the return to Road Atlanta that much greater and significant, as most people consider Formula Drift Atlanta to be the ultimate spectator event and fan experience.
It was exciting to return to Atlanta, almost two years since Formula Drift had last been there. Road Atlanta has always been one of my favorite of the FD tracks to shoot, and is also the first track I ever saw Formula Drift at, so having the opportunity to be back meant a lot to me personally. Between the sentimental value, the energy of having spectators at an event again, and the excitement of the first round of the 2021 season, this was a fantastic event. It was strange to be around people again, and I hope we can continue to look to this shift into a return to largescale events safely.
